Institute of Making

Sometimes the world and its materials are best understood through exploration and experimentation, conversation and collaboration, making and remaking.

Building on the popularity of ’s Institute of Making in Bloomsbury, the Institute of Making at East is a multidisciplinary research club for those interested in the made world, featuringprominently on the ground floor of Marshgate.

Our best ideas come from our open access ethos; we welcome not only students, researchers and makers from across the community, but also local innovators, businesses, schools and community groups from some of the capital’s most vibrant creative communities, inspiring the next generation to explore the possibilities of making.

Nowhere will our love of stuff be more evident than in our striking Materials Library: our collection of wondrous things taken from the world’s labs and sheds, grottoes and repositories.

In the new general makespace, makers will be able to get involved with a state-of-the-art selection of tools to manipulate wood, metal, ceramics, plastics, and textiles. Our new experimental kitchen will mean that, for the first time, we will be able to taste what we make.

New spaces and tools will mean more power for our teaching and research activities, such as our joint venture with Engineering and a postgraduate programme in materials and making.

We will be able to support larger and longer-term projects, as well as new multi-disciplinary courses and research activities, providing a home to anyone at wishing to explore materials and engage in making.

It is vital that we continue to support and celebrate the broadest possible perspective on materials and making, to as wide an audience as possible. Innovation, creativity and ingenuity are not the preserve of any one field or set of disciplines, but rather an expression of the complexity and interconnectedness of the human cultural ecosystem.” – Zoe Laughlin, Director, Institute of Making
