REF 2021

The impacts of ÂÒÂ×Ðã research on the wider world have been recognised in the Research Excellence Framework 2021. ÂÒÂ×Ðã SSEES came in third in research power among Area Studies units.

REF 2021 is the second assessment carried out under the Research Excellence Framework (REF), with the first one issued in 2014. ÂÒÂ×Ðã has come second in the UK for research power, with SSEES comingÌýthird in research power among Area Studies units.Ìý

Key Highlights

  • SSEES ranks 3rd in the UK for research power amongst Area Studies units.
  • 84.5.% of our research was graded 4* and 3* and our research received a 'grade point average' of 3.44 (out of 4)
  • 50% of SSEESÌýresearch was graded 4* ‘world leading’ (upÌýfrom 24.3% in 2014)
  • 34.5% of SSEES research was gradedÌý3* ‘internationally excellent (up from 25.7% in 2014).

Shaping public policy on Russia, Ukraine and Eastern Europe

Professor Andrew Wilson has helped to underpin the development of policy planning towards Russia and the six countries of the Eastern Partnership, the EU and other international institutions.

Professor Richard Mole’s research on queer migration formed the basis of expert affidavits supporting asylum claims by five Russian gays and lesbians who were granted refugee status in the US.
