Working title of thesis: Carrying the self across – Negotiating otherness in the translations and poetry of Valerii Pereleshin

Research:

My research focuses on the translations and poetry of Russian émigré writer Valerii Pereleshin (1913-1992), who lived in China from 1920 to 1952 and Brazil from 1953 to 1992. Examining Pereleshin’s translation of poetry with homoerotic themes and queer translation, the study investigates how translation serves as a field of experimentation for Pereleshin to articulate his poetic voice and embrace his otherness, which is manifest in his poetry Ariel and Poem without a Subject.

This research aims to explore the creative potential of the intersection of émigré literature and queer literature. Pereleshin’s multicultural experience, as well as his “dialogue” with Shakespeare, Pessoa and Qu Yuan through translation, contribute to a reevaluation of literary masking/unmasking, disguise and oscillation among persona, poet and translator. The examination of the relationship between translation and self-writing changes the traditional view of translation and its application in the expression of otherness.

Research interests:Russian émigré literature, transnational writing, world literature, queer literature and translation, life writing
