Description

The module aims to advance students’ core research skills and transferrable skills, benefiting them in future studies and beyond. Building on first-year learning, it offers lectures and group activities to refine students’ written and oral communication skills, preparing them for independent research projects in the final year of study.

A unique opportunity is provided through the “Meet a Researcher” activity, where students visit the renowned Francis Crick Institute, Europe's largest biomedical research centre. They engage with scientists, gaining insights into specific research areas and their career paths. Participation in a "Science and Society" debate further develops students' public speaking skills. A session on crafting effective CVs and cover letters assists in internship, PhD, and job applications.

Completion of the module requires attending all sessions and completing module coursework. Students will receive feedback on what they have done well and what could be improved in all of these activities.

The module is expected to run in Term 2 and students will be given the following list of lectures and activities:

  1. Visiting the Francis Crick Institute and attend lectures from scientists on current topics in biomedical research (cancer, genetics, developmental biology, ageing etc.)
  2. Refresher lecture on how to analyse a research paper and on how to give an effective scientific presentation.
  3. How to prepare for a final year research project
  4. How to write effective CV and a cover letter for PhD and job applications
  5. Participating in a scientific debate.

Module outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will:

  • Have a better understanding of how science works by meeting a real scientist.
  • Become familiar with a specific area of scientific research, including understanding relevant scientific terminology, research aims/objectives, the methodology used, and results with conclusions.
  • Analyse scientific papers effectively and give engaging presentations.
  • Write a summary of research in a cohesive way.
  • Write effective CV and a cover letter for job applications.
