Description

This module examines the history of the United States from 1940s to the present day through the lens of sexuality, and the experiences of sexual minorities, including: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. With a focus on the intersections of gender, race and class alongside sexuality, students will examine the ways that sexual subjects have been created, codified and constrained within structures of homophobia and capitalism. Students will also appraise the extent to which sexual minorities challenged these structures over the last century. Although the United States is the central focus of this course, we will also look to other nations and regions of the Americas for comparison.
