Description
This module will survey major topics of Chinese domestic politics and policy. It is intended to introduce Chinese politics as well as its relationship to key topics of political science and public policy in a comparative view. In this module, we will delve into the political dynamics of the regime led by the Chinese Communist Party, examining its political institutions, governance, elite power structure, and state-society relationship. The themes will be organized around general political topics such as political selection, political participation, and the politics of information. Most class materials will focus on contemporary China after the Cultural Revolution.
A basic understanding of quantitative methods in social sciences will help understand the reading materials, so a module introducing quantitative knowledge (POLS0008 or POLS0060) is a prerequisite. However, the assignments will not be evaluated based on the level of quantitative skills. No knowledge of Chinese language is required for the module.
