Ways of Making - All objects of design are conceived and made using cultural technologies that change over time. Taught by lectures and visits, this course will provide a general introduction to the main cultural technologies of hand-making, mechanical machine-making and digital making, and show how these ways of making relate to the past and present of architectural form and styles.

This module will introduce you to the main periods in Western architectural and urban history, from the classical age to today. While also offering a brief overview of architectural history outside of the Western canon, you will also be introduced to new
methodologies in architectural history and theory developed in the field of cultural studies.

On successful completion of the course you should be able to gain the following:

• A historical and contemporary perspective of the cultural and political circumstances in which objects of design (at all scales) are conceived and made.
• An overview of the history of Western architecture, landscape and urbanism. An introductory knowledge to some non-Western topics in architectural history and to some critical theories developed in the field of cultural studies with regard to the built environment
• An introductory knowledge of the variety of ideas through which people and cultures have made sense of the built environment, including references to economic and social history at large, and to other art practices and discourses.
