The team aims toÌýmaximise the efficiency of ÂÒÂ×Ðã’s infrastructure, property and physical assets byÌýsupportingÌýthe delivery of the academic, research and administrative mission of ÂÒÂ×Ðã as set out in its 2034 Strategy

2034 Strategy

Space records and statutory returns

The Space and Strategy team provide statutory statistical returns to government agencies, notably the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) as well as many informing many internal reports and committees as needed.

The office returns data throughout the year in line with externally set deadlines, with the largest statutory reports being the EMR between August and March each year.

As part of its work on statutory reporting, the team also provides advice and guidance on issues related to space and statistics data and its quality, ensuring that the University is always in a position to meet its external reporting obligations whilst maximising operational efficiency.

This entails keeping plans and records for all parts of the estate, including updates from all projects, new buildings, acquisitions and disposals which are available online.

Space reports

The Space and Strategy team provides the following reports:Ìý

Inventory of existing space usageÌý
The inventory of existing space for the units or departmentsÌýinvolved is taken from the existing database to compare the existing space withÌýthe amount of space generated by the new proposal.

Employee dataÌý
Numbers of all proposed employees, including student employees, showing their job title, and percentage of appointment. These will be used to compile organograms for building usage, adjacencies and capacities.

Graduate student dataÌý
The total number of graduate or post-graduate students, as well as the preferred teaching sizes, methods & timetabling.

Special space
Space management needs to identify existing spaces which are considered special or unique and incorporates them into the brief. These spaces are often more expensive to provide than generic space.

Routine benchmarkingÌý
Suitable guidelines are applied to generate a comparison of how much space a programme, department or initiative needs vs. how much space is assigned. This allows for a strategic analysis of activities and the supporting space.

Predesign
The benchmarks and schedules used to identify space requirements and test the fit when a major remodelling or new construction project is proposed.

ÂÒÂ×Ðã Space Standards

ÂÒÂ×Ðã has an historic Estate with many new buildings also coming on line, so space standards have to deal with existing buildings as well as being able to set templates for new buildings.

ÂÒÂ×Ðã's Space Standard guidance is available below and is intended for new buildings such as ÂÒÂ×Ðã East but should be seen as applicable for the refurbishment of buildings in the core campus going forward.
